Young Women Invited to Apply to Inaugural Leadership Training Programme

Advancing Women’s Transformational Leadership across the Caribbean

ST.JOHN’S (15 MAY) - The Caribbean Institute for Women in Leadership (CIWIL) is inviting young women (21-30), nationals and residents of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago to submit applications for the first Young Women’s Training Institute, a unique initiative designed to strengthen and support young women leaders engaged in efforts to achieve gender justice throughout the region.

The Young Women’s Training Institute seeks to strengthen capacities of young women in leadership, and promote gender equality and support for women’s equitable participation in leadership and decision-making. This programme engages women doing gender work in various sectors, including women involved in:

  • Advocacy activities for policy change and legislative reform for the achievement of women’s rights and gender equality
  • Consciousness-raising on issues of social and gender justice including: sexual and reproductive health, HIV and AIDS, Violence Against Women, environmental issues, and poverty eradication
  • Community mobilisation

The Young Women’s Training Institute aims to contribute to the process of revitalizing a Caribbean women’s movement and connecting this participation in activism and advocacy. Participants can expect to see this initiative working to achieve the following:

  • Strengthening the capacity of young female activists to assume leadership roles and participate more fully in decision making.
  • Supporting young women in their personal and professional development through inter-generational mentorship.
  • Utilising information communication technologies (ICTs) to strengthen networking, advocacy and support mechanisms for young women across the region.

This programme is supported by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women – UN Women through a grant to the Caribbean Institute to Women in Leadership. Successful applicants will receive full sponsorship for travel, accommodation and training materials for the residential programme.

The programme will be held 28th May – 15th June, 2012, with 2 weeks of online training held from 28th May – 8th June, 2012 and the residential component of the programme in Barbados from 10th – 15th June 2012. CIWIL is inviting young women (21-30), nationals and residents of Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago to submit applications online at www.ciwil.org.
