Courage to Speak’ Documentary - Jamaica

A 2016 National Study revealed that 1 in 4 women in Jamaica experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime and 1/5 of Jamaican women reported being sexually abused before reaching 18 years of age by friends or acquaintances (22.9 percent), strangers, and family members other than parents or siblings. Beyond this prevalence data, the numbers present stories of women and girls who are survivors of gender-based violence (GBV). By sharing their experiences, UN Women is supporting survivors who have broken the silence and are committed to ending the cycle of violence. Under the Spotlight Initiative, reThink Social Development Limited produced this documentary as a resource for user-producer dialogues on the development of standards, protocols, methods, approaches, and ethical guidelines on the collection of VAWG prevalence and administrative data.

Jamaica is one of five CARICOM Member States (the others being Belize, Grenada, Guyana, and Trinidad & Tobago) receiving support from the Global Spotlight Initiative to advance the rights of women and girls to live free from violence are protected, promoted, and upheld.
