Step it Up in Celebration

Cynthia Wilson has stepped it up for gender equality in education and arts throughout her 80years. She worked as a high school English teacher in Jamaica and Morocco, before returning home to Barbados in 1969, and serving in Barbados' Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at the Caribbean Tourism Research Centre. She was instrumental in establishing the National Independence Festival of creative Arts (NIFCA) in 1973, and for nearly thirty years has been representing her country and the cultural arts on national, regional and international boards, committees and fora in dance, theater and tourism. In 2015 Wilson was awarded the Companion of Honour, given for distinguished national achievement and merit, for her contribution to the cultural life of Barbados. Her poem ‘Celebration’ is a celebration of women and she has generously shared it with UN Women Caribbean MCO this international women’s day to step it up in celebration. #herlegacy #stepitup #iwd2016
