Under the Regional Spotlight Initiative, UN Women plans to award Small Grants to eligible organisations to scale up their technical substantive capacity to prevent and respond to Family Violence. Ongoing applications accepted.

Autonomous social movements and relevant CSOs, including those representing youth and groups facing multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination/marginalization, more effectively influence and advance progress on GEWE and ending VAWG. Resources are being made available under Outcome 1 and the Spotlight Initiative in Jamaica and Caribbean Regional programme respectively for non-governmental organisations to provide regional programmatic support to the UN Women MCO Caribbean.

Dr. Ronya Foy Connor is the National Gender Development Coordinator in the Ministry of Social Development and Education in the Government of Anguilla. As a woman in public leadership and academic, Dr Foy Connor is strategically positioned to challenge gender inequalities in all forms.

The UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE Campaign to End Violence against Women will commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November. The International Day and virtual event will kickstart the global mobilization of the 16 Days of Activism campaign – running from 25 November until 10 December – under the theme: “Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!”.

The 60th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women concluded today with UN Member States committing to the gender-responsive implementation of Agenda 2030. A set of agreed conclusions called for enhancing the basis for rapid progress, including stronger laws, policies and institutions, better data and scaled-up financing.

In her statement to mark this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka says “if we all work together: governments, civil society organizations, the UN system, businesses, schools, and individuals mobilizing through new solidarity movements, we will eventually achieve a more equal world—a Planet 50-50—where women and girls can and will live free from violence”.

Under a joint UN programme, UN Women, UNICEF and the OECS Commission are supporting national budget directors and finance officers from the Eastern Caribbean in conducting the gender analysis to design and cost measures, the outcome of which are budgets that are child and gender responsive.

Caribbean artists are continuing in their efforts to focus the spotlight on ending violence against women and girls.As part of their commitment to the UNiTE campaign, the Caribbean UNiTE Artistes agreed that during national and regional festivals they would seek to highlight the campaign during the high publicity events in which the majority of the populace participates.

Individuals, non-governmental organizations, groups and networks are invited to submit written communications—including, but not limited to, complaints, appeals and petitions—to the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) with information on alleged injustices and human rights violations against women in any country.

UNiTE Ambassador and Barbadian Soca Artist Michael Mercer launched an advocacy and fundraising appeal for the local shelter for victims of domestic violence.

Forty-five leading artistes from across the Caribbean have been trained as spokespersons for the UNiTE campaign as part of the social communications strategy.
