United Nations Day 2014

Date:

Friday 24 October is United Nations Day, the anniversary of the day the United Nations Charter came into force in 1945 and the Organisation was officially established. United Nations Day was proclaimed in General Assembly resolution A/RES/168 (II) of 1947 and has been observed since 1948.  In his Message the Secretary-General acknowledges the “painful setbacks” and the work still required to realize the Charter’s vision.  “But we can take heart from our achievements,” in promoting peace, human rights and development.  He calls for a renewed commitment to “empowering the marginalized and vulnerable,” and for everyone to “work in common cause for the common good.”
